Sell-by, Best-by and Use by. What do these dates really mean?

Answer: Always exercise caution if you have any concerns about a product’s integrity or food safety. WHEN IN DOUBT, THROW IT OUT!

  • “Sell-by” - tells a store how long to display the product for sale. A product should be sold before the “sell-by” date expires.
  • “Best if Used By (or before)”- recommended for best flavor or quality. It is not a purchase or safety date.  That means the food can still be used safely.
  • “Use By” - the last date recommended for use of the product while at peak quality. The manufacturer of the product has determined the date.
