7/1/17: Summertime at the Kids CAFE
For several summers Matt Talbot has hosted children for the Kid’s Garden and CAFÉ club one afternoon a week. This year we were fortunate enough to have children joining us from the Salvation Army. Children attend Monday afternoon after lunch and usually tour the garden, learn about healthy nutrition and make a yummy nutritious snack. The classes last four weeks. The first week the children learned about parts of plants we eat (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruit and seeds) and what some of these plants are. The kids had a lot of fun finding some of the plants in the garden. Once they were done gathering the plants they made a salad using those plant parts. Week two the class studied the food groups and made “hummus heads”, using all of the food groups. Week three the kids learned about insects and beneficial roles they play. While touring the garden they saw a huge bumble bee busy pollinating the flowers. We made fruity peanut butterfly snacks. The fourth and final week we tested the children’s ability to identify fruits and vegetables using their sniffers and made fruit and nut flowers for a snack. You can tell by the picture that the kids had a great time and really enjoyed the snacks they made during the Kids CAFÉ.
